Hand-lettering and typeface design
Of all the things on earth that are harder to do than they appear, this is king. Early on I added this specialty to my repertoire after noticing that no one in my generation was then taking up this dying and wonderful art.
I designed this Optometrist sign for The Broadway, Los Angeles, at Topanga Plaza Mall in Woodland Hills, California. This large sign hung over this department store’s optometry department until that department was closed when the store was remodeled following a 1993 earthquake.
Below, a section of a full page magazine ad that appeared at Christmas 1984.
Below are two roughs (unfinished) for a friend, drawn around 1980. While both are “scripts,” each has a decidely different “feel.”
