Under instruction to “copy the Maxell box,” I couldn’t help but show my client these three design alternatives. They failed to change his mind, but I had to try. A photo of the final box(es) is also shown.

The designer is often asked by a client to 'borrow' something or other from another design. And sometimes to out-and-out copy. The responsible designer will take this as an opportunity to provide original alternatives, whether the client asks for them or not. This Smart and Friendly packaging design comprehensive was one such alternative. From Eric Wrobbel Design, here: http://www.ericwrobbel.com/art/packagingdisks.htm

The designer is often asked by a client to 'borrow' from another design. The responsible designer will take this as an opportunity to provide original alternatives, whether the client asks for them or not. If the client still chooses to copy, you serve that client and everyone else best by adjusting that design to something more original to any extent possible. See this example at Eric Wrobbel Design, here: http://www.ericwrobbel.com/art/packagingdisks.htm

With a new typeface and spare, clean layouts on subsequent packaging, I moved Smart and Friendly products into a more original and differentiated look, yet retained the necessary family resemblance to the flagship disk packaging.

What: Adapted design, production art, logo
For: Packaging for cable
Client: Smart and Friendly
