Distortion Records was founded in suburban Detroit in 1969. Operations were relocated to Nashville in 1972 and in 1978 to their present location in Hollywood/Los Angeles. Never a prolific label, its occasional releases have consisted mainly of esoteric music either produced or performed (or both) by Eric Wrobbel. Editions have generally been limited, with the most popular issues selling between 80 and 100 thousand units.

The Distortion philosophy is that music is too precious to be left to corporations whose market-driven approaches yield predictable conformity. We believe in the power of well-crafted and honestly presented songs—music that has heart, and has something to say that enriches the listener in some way. And we believe that with time demands on people being greater than ever before, there is simply no time for mediocrity. Does all this mean that we believe music should be taken very seriously? Certainly not!
