YOU’LL NEVER UNDERSTAND
Words and music by Eric Wrobbel
“You’ll Never Understand” is a heads/tails kind of a song. It has something to say about conformity and celebrity worship. It puts on display those who use these tools of power on others, and those who enable them and allow themselves to be used.
Anti-intellectualism is implied in the leader/follower dynamic and that’s how it endures. Our leaders, our “influencers” rely on our willingness to suspend critical thought and relax ourselves into acceptance. We live in a heads/tails world where we are taught critical thinking in schools and yet cautioned not to use too much of it or we won’t “fit in.” When we are forced to balance these competing concepts--as we all are--we are put in a position we can "never understand" where the only rational response is acceptance. And thus we embrace as rational that most irrational of things: the blind acceptance of the rule of our “betters.”
There is a lot packed into the short lyric of this song. Whether we are called to question the influencers or the influenced, the leaders or the followers, is not clear. I suspect it is both. But either way, as with most of this songwriter’s work, it is obviously intended to inspire some thought.
