COLLECTOR'S GALLERY
Admiral Solar Transistor Radio
For a while in the early days of the
transistor radio collecting hobby,
this radio was a really hot item. One of the early collectors took
quite a shine to it and its optional "Sun Power Pak." So naturally we
all had to have one. Well, the radio was pretty hard to find, but that
solar unit proved to be very hard to find indeed. I think that first
collector that was so fascinated by it found one, but I don't think any
of the rest of us did.
It's a large radio, at 11 1/4" across, but
it's a very early one and appears in Sams TSM-1 "Servicing Transistor
Radios" manual. Though big, it sure is stylish with that great "V"
thing on the grille, some smart lettering, and an atom on the front.
What could be better than that?
This one's the tan version and is model 7L14.
It also came in red (7L12), yellow (7L16), and turquoise (7L18). Tan's
probably the most boring color, but what are you gonna do? Has a
swiveling "Roto-Scope" antenna just under the handle as you can see.
Back for more
transistor radios.
