Sanyo EARLY Transistor Radio 6C-3
In the US, we think of Sanyo as a late-comer
to the import party. Most of us had never heard of the brand until
around 1970. But the brand is a good deal older than that. I was very
surprised to learn that Sanyo was in fact one of the earliest players
in the Japanese transistor radio business in the 1950s. They are one of
the few brands that Sony sold its early transistors to. And you can see
them, oval shaped and stamped "Sony" in the picture below. Though the
Sanyo name wasn't known here, their products were. The popular Channel
Master transistor radios were made by them.
Any radio that says
"Transistorized" on the front is all right with me! And what a beauty
this
one is. It features underpainted plastic on the right side over the
dial, and a most interesting grille that appears to be chromed steel or
something--and has what looks like a faint pink anodizing on it. This
is the Sanyo 6C-3 model and it's 5 5/8" wide.
Sanyo's special relationship with Sony
continued through the 1980s when
Sanyo was one of the few manufacturers to whom Sony licensed the
Betamax VCR technology.
