Sony Walkie Watchie Transistor TV
.
Here's the classic 1965 Sony 4-204UW four-inch black and white television, also known as the "Walkie Watchie." This great little set came in this brown woodgrain version with gold trim, and also in a black version with silver trim (4-203UW). A battery pack screws onto and INto the back--see pictures. It has a rod antenna, and also an antenna built into the shoulder strap so you could walk and watch at the same time without wreaking havoc on passersby with the rod antenna! This little TV came with a plastic screen cover that covered the entire front, and an external antenna adaptor. The included AC cord could be plugged into the rear of the set for charging the batteries, or plugged into the side of the set for AC operation. The UHF dial window you see below the channel selector is often empty on surviving examples of this little TV. Owing to an interesting but less-than-adequate design, the nylon UHF indicator shaft on this model was prone to break. You can usually find the pieces rattling around inside the set. This TV featured in my book Vintage Transistor Televisions.
