The beautiful GR-711 appeared as both a Global and a Zephyr model. One of the distinguishing features of this model is its unique kinked handle/stand. Readers of my Global/Zephyr book know that many versions were made of this transistor radio. It was issued in at least two different sizes and with several different trim variations.

Well, here's the most unusual variation of them all. This just discovered Zephyr GR-711 doesn't have the handle/stand. No, it's not just missing. It never had it, or the mounts on the sides either. Instead, it was made with an easel stand on the back. Most unusual!

Though not so rare as we once thought, the GR-711 remains a highly collectible radio for the best reason of all: it is a joy to look at, with or without the handle.
